The National Research Council of Italy (CNR) is a public organization; its duty is to carry out, promote, spread, transfer and improve research activities in the main sectors of knowledge growth and of its applications for the scientific, technological, economic and social development of the Country.

Institute of Science and Technology for Ceramics
The Institute is the only CNR structure in Italy with long-term activity programs on the whole range of ceramic materials. ISTEC-CNR has its main quarter in Faenza, where it was founded in 1965.
The Institute employs 40 permanent members and 20 more units, comprising research fellows, collaborators, foreign guests, PhD candidates, trainees and thesis students.
ISTEC research is addressed to material and process innovation, in response to emergent demands of industrial, scientific and cultural sectors, both nationally and internationally.
The purpose of the research activity is the control of properties and performances of ceramic materials by means of management and engineering of the materials for specific applications, joined in the following main research lines:
